Why Is the Wind Turbine Not Working?

2/27/2014

Some have noticed that the Turbine has not been up and running in the last few days and those who noticed are correct. In one of our last winter storms, the heating element was damaged on the wind vane causing it to be damaged by the ice. The wind vane is an important part of the operation of the turbine as it keeps the turbine pointed into the wind and reduces chances the blades can be damaged.  A new part is on order and should be in soon and everything will be back up and running.
While we are talking about the turbine, I would like to share some energy usage information with everyone.  I have attached an energy usage document below that shows the total energy usage at just the PORTA Jr/Sr High building since 2007.  You will note that since 2007 the building has reduced energy usage by 71% over that time.  In 2007 the building used about 2.7 million Kwh of energy and this past year the building used 770,000 Kwh.
PORTA Central has also seen a 50% reduction in the past year which is a result of a new control system being placed in the building.
Obviously, the District has saved a substantial amount of revenue over the last 7 years and without those savings the district would have been in even more distress, financially, as a result of poor economy in Illinois.
