Update on PORTA Energy Project Savings.

11/6/2015

Some have noticed that the Turbine is back up and running after several weeks being off-line.  From time to time, like any mechanical object, the turbine has parts that fail.  This past outage resulted from a cooling motor malfunction and some electrical issues that were related to the motor failure. After some searching our maintenance provider was able to find the motor and make repairs.  We are happy to report the turbine is up and running at full capacity and it couldn't have occurred at a better time.  Historically, the best wind and production months begin in October and are at peak through May.  While it is aggravating to have the turbine down for any length of time, the Month of August is one of the best times for it to be off-line because of the poor wind and production history.  Fortunately, we will see very little economic impact for the time the turbine was off-line.
While we are talking about the turbine, I would like to share some energy usage information with everyone.  I have attached an energy usage document below that shows the total energy usage at just the PORTA Jr/Sr High building since 2007.  You will note that since 2007 the building has reduced energy usage by 71% over that time.  In 2007 the building used about 2.7 million Kwh of energy and in past years the building used 770,000 Kwh.
PORTA Central has also seen a 50% reduction in the past two years which is a result of a new control system being placed in the building.
Obviously, the District has saved a substantial amount of revenue over the last 8 years and without those savings the district would have been in even more distress, financially, as a result of poor economy in Illinois.
