PORTA High School and Lincoln Technical Education Center are excited to announce that the Industrial Technology department is expanding! A Building Trades program has been added and will begin this Fall. Lonnie McAnally has been hired to be the new Industrial Technology Teacher. The Automotive program will continue and Don Quigg will be the new Automotive Instructor. Mr. Quigg had been the Industrial Technology Teacher at Winchester until his retirement at the close of last school year. We are very fortunate to bring in such an experienced instructor on a part-time basis allowing us to continue training students in automotive mechanical repair. Mr. McAnally has a strong construction background working for both Ozella Construction and Custom Structures for many years, this along with a degree in Computer Assisted Drafting makes him an ideal fit as the Industrial Technology Instructor as we start two new programs. 2016-17 will see the start of a new Pre-Engineering course sequence along with a new Building Trades course sequence. Pre-Engineering I will be offered this year with Pre-Engineering II & III added in the future. This course sequence will be a true STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) offering as long time PORTA instructor of the Physical Sciences (Chemistry and Physics) David Stier will co-teach Pre-Engineering I.
The Building Trades program is a new L-TECH offering at PORTA and joins our existing programs in Culinary Arts, Automotive Repair and Health Occupations (Certified Nurse Assistant). The Building Trades program is designed to expose students to all phases of the small-home construction industry over a two year period. In the first year, BT I students will focus on “rough-in” construction with much of the building being performed in the wood shop. Site visits to construction sites will allow students to see the application in each stage of the “rough-in”. Many community partnerships will be needed for these site visits, at this time the following businesses have agreed to partner with us on this exciting venture:
Ozella Construction
Custom Structures
Henson Robinson
Spivey Heating and Cooling
Tri-County Electric
Thurber Excavating and Concrete
Image Design & Landscaping
Additional community partnerships as well dual credit opportunities with local community colleges are being sought, if interested please contact Darren Hartry or Lonnie McAnally at 632-3216.
The decision to offer Building Trades was finalized this summer so it was not available when students scheduled their classes for this year. Juniors and seniors interested in taking Building Trades need to contact Mr. Johnson at 632-3216 or by email at kjohnson@porta202.org to request a schedule change.
Students from Athens, Greenview and AC Central can take Pre-Engineering I and/or Building Trades I and should contact their Guidance Counselor to be added.
