Wow, continued excellence from the PORTA English and Language Arts Department. For a number of years now PORTA Students have participated in the National English Honor Society annual essay contest and have competed admirably. This year is no different. Out of the 9 top Scholarship awards given nationwide, PORTA Students earned four. What an outstanding feat, congrats to:
Madison Kuehl Director's Scholarship $3,500
Keeley Logsdon Advisory Council Scholarship $2,500
Katie Conklin Distinguished Scholarship $2,000
Megan Price Exemplary Scholarship $1,500
Additionally, Congratulations to Keeley Logsdon our newest State Champion in the nationwide Letters About Literature contest.
The "Letters About Literature"contest is a writing competition in which students write a letter to an author, living or dead, to thank them for writing a book/play/poem that has made a significant difference in the student's life. Over 1 million students have participated in the competition since it began, and there were approximately 70,000 participants this year. To become one of the state champions, Keeley had to make the first cut of letters that were deemed worthy of being sent back to the states; a second round to separate semi-finalists from finalists; and a final round to determine the state champion. Illinois is always at the front of the pack in terms of the number of letters submitted, and this year was no different.
Keeley will be honored on May 1st, when Secretary of State Jesse White will present awards to the three state champions in their respective age divisions. In addition to her cash award, Keeley's efforts will bring a $100 check to PORTA for books.
