On January 7, 2015 the PORTA Board met to discuss the Cooperative agreement between PORTA and the A-C Central District. After a lengthy discussion which can be accessed here as unofficial minutes, the Board decided not to offer a cooperative agreement in the upcoming school term. Below is an open letter the Board of Education will share with the communities of PORTA and the A-C District. Additionally, in the interest of transparency a link has been provided to the initial Sports Cooperative request from the A-C Board and the PORTA Board's response.
Open Letter to PORTA and A-C Central residents,
Over the past months, the PORTA and A-C Boards have exchanged information and discussed the possible continuation of the Sports Cooperative between the two districts. The most recent discussions occurred during board meetings the week beginning December 14th. During the December meetings, the A-C Central Board abruptly tabled the discussion while the PORTA Board discussed the matter at length and held a special meeting in January.
Through communications between the two districts, it is evident the A-C Board does not wish to continue the cooperative without significant, costly and inequitable changes, yet they appear to lack the resolve to make a final decision.
In order to prepare for the coming school year and maintain the high quality education and athletic opportunities for students from both districts, the PORTA School Board must move forward on a decision about the proposed sports cooperative. The Board has had thorough discussions about past and potential future impacts, both positive and negative, of continuing a sports cooperative with A-C and has also considered community input.
In spite of unwarranted attacks by A-C Board members on the PORTA district during last year’s consolidation efforts, the PORTA Board has maintained our commitment to developing opportunities for students in both school districts. However, it has become abundantly clear the A-C Board of Education has no desire to partner with PORTA at this time.
Given the current situation, the PORTA School Board will not consider a Sports Cooperative Agreement with the A-C School District in the coming term. We regret the loss of opportunities for A-C and potentially PORTA students, but our decisions will continue to reflect our commitment to our students and community.
We are optimistic that concerned parents and community members in the A-C district will unite to make changes which will preserve the integrity of their school district and better reflect their desire to hold the students well-being and future opportunities in high regard. We remain open to any effort which would merge our districts in the future to the betterment of all students; and in the meantime, welcome any parents interested in realizing additional opportunities for their children to consider the PORTA school district.
Interested community members are always welcome to attend School Board meetings (held the 3rd Thursday of each Month) to share ideas and express opinions on this and other issues impacting our school and students.
