The PORTA Board of Education invites the public to attend an open forum, special Board Meeting, to consider pool financial data, pool usage data and the public’s perspective on the PORTA Pool. Data can be found in the links provided Financial Data and Pool Usage data.
On Monday, January 25th the PORTA Pool Filter failed and throughout the remainder of the week the district has gathered all information needed to replace the filter. Prior to replacing the filter the old tank must be removed and because of the size and physical make-up of the tank, the district is seeking bids to remove the tank. The district is also seeking a permit from the Health Department to remove and replace the tank, if the district chose to bypass this step the district would be fined a substantial fee. An Aquatic engineer has been put into service to design the rebuild and complete the application to the Health Department per State of Illinois Law. Fortunately, acquiring replacement tanks is not an issue and once ordered they should be in district in short order, but per regulation a traditional plumber cannot connect the system, as such our pool distributor has been beneficial in seeking an appropriately accredited aquatic plumber.
While one might think these steps are unnecessary and expensive, public entities like PORTA have very little recourse in such situations and truth be told most major repairs conducted in a school system are regulated in such a manner and as you can image drive costs up.
A PORTA Board of Education goal is to encourage open and honest dialog and create a level of transparency with our families, voters and stakeholders. As such, President Joni Churchill, has called a special meeting on February 3, 2016 at 7:00 PM, to be held in the Jr/Sr High Commons. This meeting is specifically designed to share information about the District and the current financial status, the PORTA Pool’s needs, and Financial and utilization data for the pool. As noted, the meeting is an open meeting and public comment will be encouraged from those who share various views of this matter.
The PORTA Board will consider all pertinent information and only then will make a decision on the steps that should follow. It is important for the public to understand, the PORTA Board has not made any decisions on the future of the pool. In fact, the meeting has been called so as to not make any rash or uninformed decisions in regards to the pools repairs.
Please attend Wednesday’s meeting, it is the PORTA Board’s wish that all our community members are well informed about their school district finances and programs.
