Most of us remember our PE experience as those who were athletic tended to set the pace for the class and those who weren't struggled to participate at such a high level. Today, its seems, we have the perception a student who walks in the classroom, dresses and is able to avoid any recognition should receive an a "A" for his/her efforts. In both instances, some ended up hating P.E. class and physical activity because they could never run fast enough or jump high enough to achieve success or simply do not see any benefit from a 40 minute P.E. Course. Since early 2000's PORTA has been transforming physical education to focus on improving overall health with the introduction of Fitness PE, rather than a skills based fitness only program. All be it, we still use sport activities as the main focus, but the focus is on movement and effectively increasing and maintaining heart rate, not on wins, losses or how many serves you can get over the net. As a result, we’ve begun to use technology to assist with the assessment of physical activity. We’ve received a lot of feedback regarding the use of heart rate monitors in P.E. classes, both positive and negative, so hopefully the following link (Physical Education) will help explain the process and procedure for the use of this type of equipment in our classes. As a district, we are dedicated to developing both the mind and bodies of our students so they may live an active and healthy lifestyle. We would like our students to have a strong understanding of exercise principles and how to accurately and safely apply them in their lives.
With all school curriculum and technologies we will continue to evaluate and modify our programs to meet the needs of all our students, and as is usually the case you may hear unfavorable and inaccurate information about our programs. All we ask, is please do not make rash decisions based on a third party conversation, If you have questions please call our administrators and staff to clear up your concerns and questions.
Below is a link to an article of one of 10,000 schools utilizing POLAR Heart Monitors. Obviously, Naperville is a leader in the field but we hope to emulate the fine district and improve our P.E. Curriculum and your child's health routine.
