Participation in Extra-Curricular programs has shown to give advantages to students in post high school activities.
As a result of our hectic lives we are very well aware of the decline in student participation in many of the activities offered at School. Unfortunately, this lack of participation may be hindering your child's success later in life. I know that sometimes it is easier not to have your child involved because you don't have to follow the team on long trips, or you don't want to hound your son or daughter to be active and participate. But, if you make a conscience choice to make sure your son or daughter is involved you may be surprised at the benefits they may realize. You might also be astounded at what your child can achieve, who they can positively influence and what leadership skills they may learn. I am sharing a very touching email I received from Hannah Kyes, a Kindergarten teacher at PORTA, who gave some of our young leaders the opportunity to mentor young students. This is a win/win situation, please consider giving your child a little incentive to participate if they have not in the past. If your child is participating continue to demand and support their efforts. Thank You.
I wanted to pass on these pictures of the 5 members of the basketball team that volunteered at the last minute to come read a story, talk to my class, and accept the posters that they have worked so hard on this week. Throughout the post season play our class has watched the short clips of the basketball games that have been posted on channel 1450. All the students are very excited about the upcoming game and were very excited and happy to be a part of the pep assembly yesterday. When we got back to school they asked me "Mrs. Kyes what are you going to do with our posters we made?" I simply asked them what they would like me to do and they said "well we want the boys to have them!" I mentioned this to Tracy Muller who within minutes had Matt, Mitch, Nate, Michael, and Seth committed to coming to my classroom at the end of the day. I am unable to describe the pure joy and happiness on my students faces when they walked through the door. One remark was "Wow, we get to meet the REAL basketball players!" another "This is the coolest thing ever!" I was very proud of the boys who volunteered to read, and the others without asking crawled onto the floor to be with the kindergarten students. This was truly an amazing experience for my students, that I know they will talk about for days to come! I plan on putting the class picture with the boys in the Observer next week to recognize their dedication off the basketball court!
Thanks!
